Dr. Phoebe Tsang and her dental team from the Children’s Oral Care Center in Abbotsford, British Columbia closed her practice for 10 days to volunteer their services to the child patients of Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap Cambodia. A young graduate from University of British Columbia made a commitment to David Shoemaker, Medical Education Director of AHC in September 2006 that she would come help him one day. She kept her promise, not only did she go, but she brought along her husband Dr. Samson Ng, an oral pathologist and her office dental assistants Shauna Willems, Norine Kobes and Sheila Harte. Together they provided much needed dental care to young patients at the AHC dental clinic in the mornings and in the afternoon went out on outreach into the community reaching children in their schools to fluoride teeth, repair, and extract as needed. Hundreds of tooth brushes and tooth paste was provided.
Dr. Phoebe Tsang opened her dental clinic in September 2007 at
201-2051 McCallum Road, Abbotsford, BC V2S 3N5.

Hi ,
I was doing logistics stuff last week, but we now have a team of REAL loggies here and they have taken over. My understanding is that ALL our supplies have been received and we have not had anything seized, though I think there may have been a scuffle in the airport I’m not sure it involved us. I heard a similar story about another org. There was one shipment originally consigned to us without notification by an outside org and they did not notify us, but it worked out and we got the goods.
So….the long and short of it is no problems so far. But we are also buying whatever we can here to avoid the issue of the airport, so trying to minimize clearance. I can’t speak for other orgs, but I have not heard of anything major. It seems to be mostly the UN having trouble.
The phones are incredibly difficult these days, even inside Yangon.
I know the media is consumed with the idea of confiscations and frankly I think that is mostly because reporters can’t go to the field to see for themselves the good work happening. So it’s easier and sexier to focus on the rumors and stuff you hear in Yangon.
Hope you are well and glad to hear that you may be sending funds to support local orgs. Just FYI there is a lot of attention to them here and there is a big effort to support them –
they need it!
Thanks again,
Foreign NGO based in Yangon

As Myanmar continues a three day mourning period, CW Asia Fund, made up of a small group of local Vancouver and Calgary volunteers, continues its efforts to raise $1 million (CDN) for emergency aid in response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis. In ten days, CW Asia Fund raised over $585,000 (CDN) and hopes to reach its goal by the end of next week, with the expectation that the Canadian Government will step in to match funds raised.

In the hills 150 miles north of Yangon ‘Htamon Ngwe Taung’ village where the 23 household villagers have invited us to the opening ceremony of the gravity flow water supply system that has been made possible with your contribution. We were overwhelmed by their welcome and happiness. There were 2 village bands, with drums and bamboo flutes and they honoured us with gunshots!! I felt pompous!! Having cool spring water in the dry hot season is a real wonder so their smiles and grateful look really warm our hearts. How I wish you could be there! Honest, my thoughts were with you both that day. Attached is a group photo of the procession. The regular project ending report with full photos and financial accounting will be sent on completion of the two other projects funded by you. God bless you.” With warm regards, Morine Po, Community Health Care Cordinator, METTA DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION

An Invitation to Help Change the World for Children in rural Cambodia
Help raise $2,500,000 the cost of construction, equipment and operations for 5 years.
A Naming Opportunity
Children suffer the most drastic consequences of poverty. In Cambodia thousands die each year of preventable and treatable disease, where it is not uncommon for a child to die of complications from respiratory infections, diarrhea, and diseases practically eradicated in the more-developed world:
- 15% of Cambodian children, or 60,000, die before age 5
- 35% of Cambodian children are not immunized for polio, measles, or diphtheria
- 45% of Cambodian children under 5 are moderately to severely underweight
- 12,000 Cambodian children under the age of 15 live with HIV/AIDS

CWAF along with the help of many others filled a 40′ container and shipped it to Cambodia. The container was filled with everything from bicycles for the children at M’Lop Tapang to ultrasound machines for Angkor Hospital for Children. Here are some the emails to CWAF:
CWAF, the container! Thank you! David and I had a seriously mad day at port. I can now totally understand why you were stressed filling it, so much stuff! We are still sorting it out as it got dark and we only half emptied. We already have received great stuff and the bikes were a huge bonus! Will email you more when we have it all unpacked. Warm wishes, Maggie M’Lop Tapang, Project Director (www.mloptapang.org)
